Flogging in Sports?

Have you ever thought that the threat of flogging for a losing participant would make for a more intense sporting spectacle?  Young men, like college wrestlers, would compete that much harder to avoid being seized up (unless they were like those that frequent this blog, of course) to avoid the pain of a public flogging.

This would be most easily implemented in one-on-one sports such as, as previously mentioned, wrestling, boxing, or cage fighting.  But it could be modified so that team sports could also be punished in such a way.  If the rules were created so that the team captain (i.e. quarterback in football) would be stripped to the waist and flogged by two members of the winning team immediately after the game, the teams are likely to play that much harder.  Of course this would really depend on how much the team liked their leader—if they didn’t care for him too much, they might occasionally purposefully lose a match in order to teach him a lesson.  So, it could add a very interesting dynamic to each and every event!

What are your thoughts on this?  Would you watch a sport that you otherwise have no interest in if the loser was flogged after the match?  Do you think more people would be drawn to sports if this were part of the game?  Would this cause you to buy a ticket and actually attend a live event, instead of just watching it on TV?

  1. Name's Andrew... and I think for the general populace, this would be a guarantee of higher attendance. The Colosseum was a perfect example of the spectating public's appreciation for adrenaline and pain. As far as myself, it's a resounding yes - I would be a season ticket holder for several sports that I'm otherwise ambivalent about.

*As an aside - we may have finally hit on an idea to make NASCAR worth watching. lol*

Incidentally, as I don't have an account on the meet'n'beat site, I'll mention here that I'm from Colorado, 27, and strongly in search of someone here or in an adjacent state to trade whipping with...

My particular forte isn't inflicting, it's receiving, but I can handle a whip quite smartly if you're in need of a beating.

I've been flogged with a range of instruments ranging from rubber floggers to braided wire cables with the ends twisted into tiny hooks. I'm fortunate in that I very rarely (if ever) scar, and heal remarkably quickly given the severity of some of the beatings I've had.

Still never tasted a bullwhip though, and I'm insanely curious...

    2. Interesting your being flogged with wire cables as I've always been turned on by the "wired" cats they sometimes used especially by some captains in the navy who had men who needed that extra bite to cut their bare backs and the bosuns weaved wire into the ends of the nine tails as cutting flails. Must have made for delicious deep stripes and given a good bloody back with say six dozens or so.

    3. Andrew here again,

I don't have a Google account (don't care for Google's privacy practices) but I signed up on the backup site as CultOfOne, and also left an entry in the "Meet N Beat" thread. Bring on the lashes!! Grin...

Wire cables... it's actually a cat of nine I made from some flexible outdoor cable I had a spool of. I cut nine tails of varying lengths (so each one would be felt individually at the tip). It had a somewhat hard plastic core, so I shaved the soft rubber off of half of the tails and sharpened the plastic to an edge for about an inch. The other 4 tails I stripped down to the wire, and bent it out in a 90 degree angle in all directions, so it would hook a bit when it wrapped. It doesn't "stick" like in "The Passion" and rip off chunks of skin (I'm a fan of whipping - not suicidal. lol.) but it does leave some lovely cuts surrounded by ugly bruises when it grabs.

    4. As a boy, I read that in the 18th century, if a man was to be punished vey severely, wire whips would be used on his naked flesh so as to stripe him permanently....and at times the whip might be rested on hot coals to burn his stripes onto his body with each LASH. two whip mates of mine and I took discarded telephone cables, stripped off the outer covering, and collected only the red wires which we wove into single-tail whips with about six inches unbraided at the end.....we went to our regular place in the woods, and conducted prolonged scourgings NAKED...each of us hanging from an overhead limb in the middle of a clearing while the other two LASH MASTERS whipped front and back.....we challenged each other to more and more stripes...crying out in anguish, but taking the LASH like he-men.....

    5. Sounds a very hot and severe scene and agree that such scourgings and flayings are best taken stripped completely NAKED so that the male body can be striped at will during prolonged flagellation by the Lash Master(s).

I wonder if captains would get around the limits supposedly set on the number of lashes they could award per flogging by seeing that the cat-o'-nine-tails were made as severe as possible with longer tails, nine knots per tail and often ordered the ends be braided with wire to ensure the culprit got what he deserved and needed when ordered up to the gratings: his bare back well criss-crossed with cleanly cut stripes even if only receiving one or two dozens of lashes. Personally, I think a minimum of six dozens be awarded to any fit male over the age 16

  2. Good to see a new commenter.

I'm of two minds about this. I have in mind the horrible storied of tortures Iraqi athletes endured if they weren't victorious under the former Hussein regime. Horrid, absoultely horrid.

On the other hand, I think a training regime where a trainer would set impossible (and ever-increasing) goals and whip the athlete in proportion to how far he fell short has always been a hot fantasy of mine.

It's a real shame when reality intrudes into a good fantasy.

  3. In the case of Hussein punishing his athletes for losing, that was against their will. If we created a new league for each sport for each team sport such as football, soccer, baseball, etc--and a new title/belt for individual sports like wrestling, boxing, cage fighting, etc--then the athletes would enter and compete with their full participation, knowing that the contests will be that much more competitive in order to avoid public punishment. Any participant who refused to undergo a flogging for losing would be ejected from the league and have to deal with the public shame of going back on his word.

  4. Actually, I remember this from school, many years ago. The gym coach would motivate guys with the paddle: "Last boy out of the showers gets a lick." "Last one around the track gets licks." This definitely had us putting as much effort as we could into getting around that track!

  5. some of us remember being "motivated" in school (academics and sports) by our dads with their leather straps and belts. Every report card review when I grew up was done with my father's thick punishment strap coiled on the desk and often as not followed by a stripping naked for a leathering if I disappointed him.

    1. Best way for young bucks to learn. "When the mind fails to comprehend the body must be punished." My USMC dad made sure his boys understood that--with extra welllaidon leather and rawhide for not taking it with fortitude. Oohra

  6. I really think a separate flogging league would be a great idea. The men who want to compete in it would have to be initiated by taking a flogging, to prove their acceptance of the terms. And also to show them what they are getting into. It would enhance the motivation to avoid it if they have tasted the lash before.

  7. A back lashing makes a wrestling match interesting. Two men, cat o nine tails brought out and placed between them. Loser of the match take 40 lashes. Just a private between men. My back's been whipped that way only it was more than 40. After a match your already stripped for it and the sweat makes your back skin more senstive so the flogging is tougher. And losing the fight makes it more deserved, the winnner laying it acorss your bare back.

  8. It's a good idea for a betting pool too. It would make spectator sports less of a passive activity. There are all kinds of ways rules could be spelled out but those with the losing bets would end up getting whipped or doing something equally unpleasant to reduce the number of lashes.

  9. Yep - whip-wrestling's a good idea, as stated before you're already stripped and sweating so fasten the loser to one of the corners and let the lashing begin.

    1. Bare back wellstretched to make the skin taut to augment the pain. Bare feet just supported on the deck, feel that stretch in your shoulders and pits. Severe flogging to remember will make sure you train harder next time. Aye, Sir. My big hairy balls are tingling for the nextfight Sir! Whip this warrior back harder, Sir!!

    2. My buddies and I as young teens would whip each other after playing strip poker....first one to lose all his clothes would hang naked voluntarily from a tree limb or the overhead beam in the garage and be whipped by the others with long leather bootlaces knotted!!!....over the entire body! No regard for his modesty or humiliation...and we did the same after wrestling contests stripped to our jock straps.....the LASH for the loser....

  10. It is a known fact that in ancient Sparta, contests were held for Spartan boys to prove how tough they were. One of them was having a bullwhip cracked on their bare backs until they were bloodied up. The last person to faint and or scream under it was the winner. Often times this was done voluntarily sometimes even for fun.

This was taken very seriously by their parents who often said things like, "Don't you dare faint!" or other motivational things too. Yeah back then this was fun for the whole family kinda. If we could bring those types of contests back, then we would have a new extreme sport.

  12. This kind of flogging endurance testing was also popular in Egypt and some other middle east countries 100 years ago among young men. Flogging and lashings were prevelant as they are now (more then, certainly in Egypt) and young males would strip half naked or to loincloths and lash or cane each other. It seems to be a characteristic of testosterone not only to fight and win but show we are the toughest and have the most endurance, stamina and capacity for enduring pain. Crossfit emphasizes this and plays on it and men are encouraged to work out shirtless and let bodies shine with sweat as you and your fellow gym rats glory in tough grueling manhood workouts.

    1. I knew a guy stationed in both Egypt and Saudi Arabia who saw and knew of this lashing ritual between young men....stripped to loincloths, and using long thin single tail WHIPS on their bodies...sometimes lashing their own flesh in front of their mates to show their strength and devotion before submitting to the whip expertise of the others.....they would stretch taut pulling the body totally so that the skin would feel every stripe in stinging anguish.....although they would cry out in torment, they continued to lash and be lashed.....until the sentence was completed....

  13. I'm a freshman wrestler in college and I was researching some stuff for a meet and came across this post somehow, and I understand this is some kind of fetish site, but people who don't share your "whipping fetish" would not want to go to a sporting event and see the team whipped o_O
I wrestle cuz it's fun and I enjoy it. If I knew I was gonna get whipped on my bare back with wires and cords and bullwhips or whatever; that would totally take the fun out of the sport. I would not want to even wrestle. I don't mind playing games with my friends to challenge how much pain we can take (like punch for punch etc.) but sport whippings would take the fun of the sport right out of it. The wrestling factor in itself is an adrenaline rush and can be very taxing on the body; I can't begin to list the negatives of physical punishment on a team.
And in football why would you want to put your quarterback out of commission? I for one would be totally freaked out if I were at a football game and they whipped the loser. That's messed up third world BS right there or like BDSM. But I reiterate, I'm not hating on your fantasy here, I'm just saying that's a really bad idea... lol...

    1. Fair enough JRad. I wrestled in HS, played football likewise. No, never had to get lashed. What I myself had in mind (can't speak for others) was private gamesmanship, bets and challenges, laying it on the line. [I like gut punching too. In fact, I recommend it it when your working out abs, hanging leg raises and have your workout partner deliver firm punches to obliques and abs--not super hard but keeping things tight.]
Private challenges between guys is another matter.
Another factor is a lot of wrestling and grappling programs today are coed. Stupidly IMO, but they are, and whipping girls is out of line for me though there are some female members of this blog who would disagree! Chicks can whip me for fun or punishment but not the other way around.

By the way, a whipping wouldn't put the average in-shape guy out of commission. Just hurts, that's all. It's only pain.

    3. Great idea with the private challenge. Need to get together a whipping challenge club with regular meetings. Like Fight Club but with whips. Shirts off at the start of the meeting, everyone takes some lashes. Newbies get it first as initiation. But everyone leaves with some stripes on their back.
